Wendi & Todd’s Hawaii Adventure Couples Session at Kaihalulu Red Sand Beach on the Road to Hana
For Wendi and Todd's adventure session in Hawaii, we met up about 30 miles down the Road to Hana on the day before their wedding. This stunning highway is known for narrow switchback roads, scenic bridges, and breathtaking landscapes – think beaches, lush forests, and waterfalls.
Although it’s absolutely beautiful, the bumps, sheer cliffs, and sharp turns can feel like a bit of a rollercoaster, and I was definitely grateful for a ginger shot along the way. If you’ve never had one, a ginger shot is basically concentrated ginger juice that they sell at various stands catering to tourists, and they're pretty popular along the road to Hana. This road can easily make your stomach do flips, and ginger is known to help with nausea. If you ever find yourself on the Road to Hana, a ginger shot might just be your best friend. ;)
When stopped near Kaihalulu Beach for the session, a gorgeous hidden red sand beach nestled between volcanic cliffs. Wendi’s shimmery emerald green dress looked incredible against the red sands, while Todd's beachy shorts and classic button-down perfectly suited the relaxed Hawaiian vibe on this secluded beach. Looking back, I can’t believe how amazing these two looked, because Wendi confided in me later on that the Road to Hana had gotten her feeling pretty sick too!
We spent some time hiking around the volcanic cliff areas overlooking the beach, and then made our way down to dip our toes in the water and walk barefoot in the red sands with the waves softly hitting the beach, and crashing into rocks a bit further out in the ocean. We had the beach to ourselves because the trail to this beach isn’t super easy, but it was worth it for these incredible views.
Update: The trail to Kaihalulu Beach has gotten much worse in recent years due to landslides, so hiking this area can unfortunately be dangerous for inexperienced hikers, especially if you're not used to navigating slippery cliff edges.
