Amanda & Jonny’s Intimate Backyard Elopement and Vietnamese Tea Ceremony

Amanda & Jonny reached out to me not too long ago, and wondered if I was available for a micro wedding in her parent’s backyard. They are getting married next summer in Colorado, but her 93 year old grandpa & grandma aren’t able to travel, so they wanted to honor them by having a traditional tea ceremony and get married closer to home so they could witness it here in Des Moines.

It’s tradition during the tea ceremony for the couple getting married to ask advice from their parents and grandparents, and Amanda’s grandpa gave them the sweetest speech about love and trust and friendship and how to make love last.

As we were doing portraits later in the day, on the way back to their house Amanda & Jonny asked MY advice as well: I told them that after almost 8 years of marriage, communication is key. We go through waves and seasons in marriage, but nothing is more powerful than open and honest communication between you and your partner. 🖤
